Objectives:
Students must have a strong basic knowledge about refractive errors and their remedy.
Have an optical basis of many of the ophthalmic diagnostic and curative optical devices.
Know the basic knowledge about& advice the patients about their use.
Contents:
Light energy characteristics, high bundles, wave motion, interference and diffraction.
Reflection of light – laws of reflection – reflection by plane and curved surfaces – images formed by reflection.
Refraction: definition – Laws – refraction at plane and curved surfaces – images formed by refraction, total internal reflection.
Prisms – definition- characteristics - ophthalmic use.
Lenses, definition, types, refraction by lenses, spherical lenses, cylindrical and toric lenses, images formed by a lens- Dioptric power.
Refraction by the eye- schematic eye – images formed by the eye.

Maxwell’s equations, Poynting vector and energy velations.
Wave motion in free space. Reflection and Transmission of plane waves. Electromagnetic theory of transmission lines; guided waves. Wave guides.

The student should take care and protect the eye while doing the setests and this initials a full knowledge about the case and should protect themselves and the patient in certain infectious diseases.

Justification:
For proper & successful medical practice the student must be furnished with all medical information & data so as to acquire the basic skills to manage situations he may face. It is very essential to acquire such skills because in Sudan as a developing country suffering lack of trained medical staff & poor facilities. (Personnel & equipment).
