Introduction

The glorious revolution in ophthalmology and eye care service necessitates the need for highly qualified personnel for perfect performance. Optometry is an integral health care profession that is autonomous, continuously educates, upgraded and legislated.

    Optometrists are the primary health care practitioners of eye and visual system as well as they is one of community ophthalmology and blindness combating pillars. 

     They provide valuable comprehensive eye and vision care which includes refraction and dispensing, re habitation conditions of visual system and detection, diagnosis and management of some ocular diseases.

     Sudan is a leading country in optometry education since 1954. MOTC has a great infra structure to develop such program along with existing programs of Certified Ophthalmic Assistant(COA) and Certified Ophthalmic Technologist (COT),via qualified teaching staff (Ophthalmologist and Optometrists) adequate training facilities through out eight eye hospital including tertiary level and spectacular factory (Frames and lenses) and research facilities via makkah research center.

Optometry is a health care profession which is concerned with the health of the eyes and related structures. The BSc of optometry is an undergraduate optometric course which offers a professionally recognized qualification preparing for a flexible and rewarding career in optometry. 

Optometrists work with other health professionals including general medical practitioners and ophthalmologists to ensure the best eye and vision health outcomes for the population.

 

 

Goal of program

This program is aiming to educate and clinically train the candidates to examine the eyes and integrity of the visual system, to diagnose vision problems or impairments, and to prescribe and provide treatment.

Nature of program

A solid background in basic sciences and a thorough understanding of the principles of visual science is the foundation of optometric education. Pre-clinical optometry courses cover the areas of general optometry and optometric specialties. Clinical courses provide the opportunity to work with patients in primary vision care and a variety of specialty services. 

Different courses are offered on five years on basis of ten semesters. Each courses requiring attendance at the college for 16 weeks. Teaching strategies vary between courses and may include didactic lectures, clinical training, videos, seminars, discussion of clinical case scenarios, and attendance at hospital departments. At the end of each course evaluation should be performed as follows: Attendance 10%,Assignment and activities 40% and Final exam 50%.

 

 

  Admission Requirement

* Candidates must be a secondary school graduate (biology).

* To pass all basic scientific subjects (Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics).

* To attend the college interview.

Academic Degree

* Graduates will be awarded the bachelor of optometry to those who score a minimum CGPA (Cumulative Grade Points Average) of 2.00 after successful completion of the curriculum.

Course credit hours

The credit hours appearing with each course is the total number of hours earned for Theory (Th), Laboratory work (lab), and Clinical practice (Clin). The total Contact hours (cont) based on:

One (Th) hour per week equal one credit hour.

Two (Lab) hours per week equal one credit hour.

Three (Clin) hours per week equal one credit hour.
