ENG 4701 Microprocessors& Microcontrollers: (2, 0, 2) 3

Objectives:

To apply knowledge gained in previous electronic & computer courses to microprocessors & microcontrollers systems.

Contents: 

- Microprocessors families + Intel ( 486,386,Pentium). Internal microcontroller architecture. Programming model, machine, assembly, high level language, instruction format structured programming, addressing modes, subroutines and parameters passing. 

Input / Output data transfer format.

- Interrupts, microprocessor development systems.

Teaching methods:

BME  4701 Biomedical Workshop III    (1,0,2)  2

Justifications:

Ophthalmic Technologists and Bio-medical engineers need to learn all aspects of the sophisticated equipment used in ophthalmic practice.The complexity of the equipment justifies the need for general and specialized training on the equipment for reliable operation and safety reasons.

Objective:

To introduce students to advanced ophthalmic equipment, practice skills in testing and maintenance.

Contents:

  1. Change of batters and bulbs in ophthalmic instruments 
  2. Maintain and calibrate ophthalmic equipment.
  3. Maintain emergency equipment.
  4. Clean lens and prisms.
  5. Maintain ophthalmic theater equipment.

At the end of this course the student should be able to practice and perform a simple project program in a scientific way.

  5. Computer analysis.
  6. Reference and proper reference writing.
  7. Conclusion and Recommendations.

BS 4702   Safety and Quality Control: (3,0,0)3

Objective:

To introduce the students to the medical device standards & regulations QA in health care system as per the international standards.

Contents: 

Consist of three modules: biomedical Engineering Practice, Medical Device Standard and Regulation, and Troubleshooting Techniques. Biomedical Engineering Practice includes hospital organization, hospital and medical devices, industry Standards. Functions of the biomedical engineering technologist in R&D and technical support settings. Medical Devices standards and Regulations. Electrical safety in patients care areas and IEC 60-601 ( Medical Electrical Equipment) standards International medical device regulations with emphasis on electrical safety and design assurance. Problem – solving and troubleshooting techniques and methods. Acquisition of equipment, technical assessment and data analysis, inspection and testing of equipment upon purchase.

Inventory control by manufacturer , model, serial number , purchase date , price and warranty information . Preparing Preventive maintenance and inspection schedules. Implementation of Preventive maintenance plan. Policies on maintenance and analysis on choice of appropriate types of maintenance system. Breakdown maintenance .Types of failures. Failure analysis.

Maintenance equations and calculation involving failure rates, mean time to failure and mean time between failures. Probability of failures, random nature of failures. Perform Laboratory sessions, projects and assignments to gain experience in electrical safety measurements, developing maintenance schedules, Inventory control and troubleshooting techniques.

-Training in eye camps domestically and abroad.

ENG  4801 Project      (6,0,0,) 6

Objective:

Students undertake and complete a biomedical engineering project, related to Ophthalmology. 

Contents: 

From given functional specification students develop detailed plan and schedule for a project. 

Following detailed plan, students participate in the design and development of the project, and complete the project independently. These tasks will include area, design, parts acquisition, printed circuit board layout, circuit building, packs design and fabrication, wiring, troubleshot and final testing. 

 Student must maintain detailed history file a logbook and preference technical report on completion of the project.
